When members of the Remodelers Council of the Tampa Bay Builders Association heard about a teenager who’d been injured in a home invasion, they decided to help. Because the family’s circa-1990s home was ill-suited for the teen, who now needed a power wheelchair to get around, he was living elsewhere. Greaves Construction took charge of the bathroom remodeling project, gutting and reworking the plumbing so the space could be better equipped with a roll-in shower and a higher vanity. “This bathroom has to function for all the new needs, while becoming a really beautiful bathroom,” says designer Johanna Goldlust Seldes of Interior Design Consulting, who worked with Greaves Construction. Details were important too. The remodeling team used offset hinges on the door to gain those extra few inches of space, created shower niches at chair height and added a second showerhead and valve also within reach. A pocket door was installed to make access to the bedroom easier. The final result, Seldes says, was a beautiful and functional space that brought the family back together.
