Greaves Construction

Do you want to keep track of your kids? Build a home theater, says remodeler Jon Greaves of Greaves Construction, who teamed with interior designer Johanna Goldlust Seldes to create just such a “kid magnet” while remodeling a circa-1940s home for a family that in-
cluded four youngsters. Earlier renovations—an addition in the 1980s and an updated kitchen in the 1990s—hadn’t resolved the space problem for this growing brood. But in addition to the home theater, the new addition would include a family room, a half bath, a wine room and a master suite with a sitting area. “It was all about getting the best function and best design for the clients so they can get back to having fun together,” says Seldes of Interior Design Consulting. Creating a seamless addition was a challenge because nothing was level, Greaves says. “Matching wall dimensions is not so bad but tying into existing floors that wave and bow is intense.” The eco-minded remodeling team used nontoxic paints and energy-efficient windows, appliances and a heating and cooling system with programmable thermostats. Plus, the existing molding was reused.
