More of Us Are Now Remodeling
Statistics from the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) 2007 Remodeling Market Index registered 46.2, up from 44.8 the previous quarter.
Any reading over 50 indicates that the majority of remodelers view market conditions as improving, so 46.2 isn’t exactly a resounding reading—but, unlike the results of similar surveys among builders of new homes, at least remodeling is trending upward.
And the future of remodeling looks bright, with growth projected even when the new-home market recovers.
Americans spent $235 billion on home remodeling in 2007, according to the NAHB, up $3 billion from 2006. And remodeling, which currently accounts for 40 percent of residential construction, is expected to overtake new-home construction by dollar volume within the decade.
If you’re considering a remodeling project, you’ll find plenty of great information here. I hope you enjoy reading it—and looking at the beautiful photography—as much as we enjoyed putting it all together.

DOING YOUR HOMEWORK
Remodelers have a challenge ahead—to help educate the public about professional remodelers in the area. The premier edition of REMODEL Tampa Bay was a huge success in helping increase public awareness about the local remodeling industry.
It is a great time to remodel. Finding the right contractor is the most important part of the remodeling puzzle. Here are some pointers:
Is the contractor a member of any building associations?
Is the contractor informed on the latest industry standards?
Does the contractor hold certifications beyond a contractor’s license?
Is the contractor licensed and insured? You can ask for an insurance certificate.
Check references, visit jobs in progress and check their condition because they will be in your home. The pros are out there—and they’re not hard to find.
