Amendment 4 is Bad Policy

Amendment 4, touted by supporters as “Hometown Democracy,” is a thinly disguised effort to stifle development reviewed and approved by elected officials.
If approved, Amendment 4 would require a referendum on each land-use comprehensive plan amendment.

It would be an economic disaster for Florida. It is absurd to expect voters to read and analyze hundreds of proposed amendments, many of them highly complex. Our taxes pay for professional planners to evaluate development proposals and to recommend approval or denial to representatives that we elect.

We can, and should, help shape those decisions by getting involved in the process at the beginning. And we can vote against those who cast votes with which we disagree.

There’s no question sprawl has resulted because, in some cases, elected leaders made poor decisions. But electing smart and responsive leaders is more important than amending the state constitution to give land-use decisions to voters who may be uninformed and uninterested.
