Big Winners

The Southeast's most prestigious building awards come home.
The annual Southeast Building Conference Aurora Awards are a little like the quiz show Jeopardy and the Miss America pageant rolled into one. Homebuilders who vie for these prestigious peer awards must create new homes that are smart, functional, innovative and beautiful at the same time. For the prospective homebuyer, an Aurora Award is an extra assurance that the home they purchase is of top quality.

At the 25th annual Southeast Building Conference in Orlando, judges honored four area homebuilders with Aurora Awards for their outstanding recent projects. These builders competed with other homebuilders, architects, merchandisers and remodelers in 12 Southeastern states for these prominent awards.

Pruett Builders, Inc. won two Grand Auroras-for Best Energy Efficient Home and for Technology House-for the Villa Venezia II model at Blythefield at The Country Club at Lakewood Ranch. The Florida Homebuilders Association hails it as the most energy-efficient and healthy green home in the Southeast. The Villa Venezia II boasts the latest technology in healthy living, energy efficiency, water conservation, passive solar water heating and information and entertainment technology. For the homebuyer, that means better indoor air quality and significant energy savings. And, with elegant architectural features like soaring ceilings and big arched windows, it's a real looker, too. The 5,486-square-foot Villa Venezia II can be built for $745,000 plus site; the award-winning Lakewood Ranch model is upgraded to $1.45 million plus site.

Kemick Construction Company also took home a Grand Aurora for Best Solar Energy Efficient House, for the Majestic I at Ancient Oaks in Parrish, in northeast Sarasota" target="_blank">Manatee County. Its energy-efficiency features have qualified it for the FPL Build-Smart and Sun Built programs, and the Environmental Protection Agency's "5-Star" designation. The Majestic I model is priced from $275,000 including standard site.
