The Heat Is On
Most newcomers (and some crabby old-timers) complain about the oppressive heat and humidity of an Orlando summer, but I love it. For me, there’s just no better feeling than stepping out of an air-conditioned building and climbing into my sweltering car. I’ll actually sit there for a moment without the A/C running and enjoy the makeshift sauna.

Then I come to my senses. But it’s a lovely sensation for a short time.

We’re so fortunate to live in Orlando, where the weather is usually fabulous-sunny skies, pleasant temperatures and the occasional afternoon shower to make the evenings more pleasant.

Which isn’t to say that air conditioning isn’t crucial. A few years ago, when we were hit by three hurricanes in a row, my home was without power for several weeks combined. I like the heat, but that experience qualified as too much of a good thing.

But, generally, I welcome the summer months and all that they have to offer—sunny days, balmy nights and endless opportunities for outdoor activities.

Which is why in this issue of Orlando Homebuyer we’re highlighting outdoor living spaces, including pools, spas, summer kitchens and more. Now more than ever, new homes are being planned with outdoor spaces that extend and expand the living area. In this special photo-feature, you’ll see some fabulous backyard retreats created by the region’s top design professionals.

Another trend we’ll cover is golf-course living. Florida’s weather makes it a golfing mecca, of course, but did you know that most people who buy homes in golf-course communities don’t even own a set of clubs? They’re after the lifestyle and the other amenities that most golfing communities offer.

In addition, we’ve got a special report on one of Central Florida’s fastest growing areas—Polk County. Once known for its citrus growing and phosphate mining, this sprawling area between Orlando and Tampa is truly the next frontier in Central Florida.

So don’t complain about the heat. Embrace it. Enjoy it. Few are as blessed as we are, with great weather, a vibrant economy and hundreds of beautiful neighborhoods.
