Remodel Trends

Because they interact with clients and suppliers on a daily basis, Central Florida remodelers tend to hear first about new products and new trends. We asked some top local companies to share their latest favorites:

We’re finding people like to see more painted tile work. Some other areas that seem to be constantly enhanced are the details to the tile work in the bathrooms, flooring and kitchen backsplashes.

Vegetable sinks are popular. They’re great for entertaining or if there are two chefs in the house. And large kitchens are certainly a trend. The kitchen is becoming the focal point again—the heartbeat of the home."
Jack McGrath, Jonathan McGrath Construction

Recycled glass countertops are very green. They’re extremely durable and you can almost see through them. Bamboo is another green trend in cabinets and drawers. My personal trend is to get away from upper and lower cabinets and opt for drawers with organizers. Also, placing cabinets on countertops offers a little more storage in an organized way for spices and canned goods. You may lose a little counter space, but you get more versatility than with a pantry.
Marla Greenough, Greenough Interior Design

Opening walls and removing load-bearing walls in order to expand the possibilities for the kitchen is a trend today.
Rick Jennings, Nautilus Homes

With a large family, a pantry is very important. I include one drawer in every pantry for little items, like cake decorations and snacks. It’s all about giving everything a place. Everything doesn’t fit well on a shelf.
Laura Luchian, Closetmasters

Blanco Silgranit sinks are very popular. The trend is moving away from stainless steel. Silgranit sinks are made of 80 percent crushed granite, so they’re scratch- and chip-resistant, non-porous and they withstand heat.
Amy Thrasher, Phil Kean Designs

Some trends we’re seeing in appliances are built-in coffee machines, speed ovens that combine microwaves and traditional baking heat, steamer wall ovens and drawers in refrigerators, freezers, microwaves and dishwashers.

More people are seeking a simpler look, often contemporary but with cleaner lines and less ornamentation. More clients are also looking at traditional white or cream painted-finish cabinets with a country farm-house or a traditional style. And more and more we’re designing walk-through pantries that feature wine storage and/or additional space for preparation.
