2008 Florida Homebuyer Home Design Challenge 1st Place winner--Gary Hancock of Winter Park Design.
2008 Florida Homebuyer Orlando Home Design Challenge
????The Alonenows, though fictional, are typical of many early baby-boomers who are now ready to downsize and settle into homes designed specifically to accommodate their evolving interests and changing needs.
????So Bob and Eleanor were selected as the “clients” for the 2008 Florida Homebuyer Orlando Home Design Challenge.?
????It’s the second year of the highly-popular competition, during which the region’s top architects and home designers are asked to create an ideal home for a fictional family. This year, top notch out-of-area architects judged the entries.
????The pros are given some background information as well as some specific “must-haves” as a basis from which to work.
????But, although the family is fictional, the homesite is real. The Alonenows’ hypothetical residence would be built at 1021 Lincoln Circle in Winter Park.?
????Therefore, the plans submitted were required to adhere to City of Winter Park regulations regarding such issues as structure size, setbacks and tree pre-servation. In addition, physical characteristics of the homesite had to be taken into account.
????Among the couple’s requests were a his-and-her office, a three-car garage for their “toys,” a master retreat and a guest suite for visiting friends and family members.?
????They also insisted upon a club room with a bar, an open kitchen and an outdoor living area ideal for entertaining or just taking it easy.
????Any architectural style was welcome, which allowed participants to have fun, use their imaginations and come up with some unique approaches to making Mr. and Mrs. Alonenow happy.
????On the links below, you’ll find the elevations and floorplans as well as judges’ comments about their favorite designs.

Outstanding Feature
1st PLACE
Feature:? Overall Design and Restraint
Robert Harris, Robert Harris Architect
From the Judges This is far preferable to the architecture-on-steroids that permeates much of today’s design. This plan is highly believeable as appropriate architecture for Winter Park. Kudos to the designer.
2nd PLACE
Feature: Rear Garage
Gary Hancock, Winter Park Design
From the Judges Pulling the garage to the back of the lot and using it to form the garden space is yet again logical and conservative, with the garage providing dual functions.
3RD PLACE
Feature: Space Planning???
Jim Lucia, Lucia Kassik & Monday
From the Judges The overall planning and spatial definition of the rooms is excellent.? The spaces are both highly ordered and coherently arranged, yet flexible and open.
