MERGER MELDS TWO ICONIC HOMEBUILDERS

If you haven’t heard of CalAtlantic Homes, you soon will. It’s the fourth-largest homebuilding company in the U.S. — and has a presence in more than 30 communities in Central Florida alone. 

There was no CalAtlantic Homes until last October, when the new building behemoth was created via a merger between the well-established Ryland Group, founded in 1967, and Standard Pacific Homes, founded in 1965.

Even before the merger, Ryland and Standard Pacific were major players. But the combination — called CAA on the New York Stock Exchange — is a powerhouse that covers 41 major markets in 17 states from coast to coast.

CalAtlantic Group Inc., the umbrella company, will operate CalAtlantic Homes as well as CalAtlantic Mortgage, Cal-Atlantic Title and CalAtlantic Insurance.  

“A new name reflects a new chapter in the history of our two companies,” says Ryland President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Nicholson. “The CalAtlantic Homes name points to the breadth of the new company’s footprint, which extends from coast to coast and all points in between.”
