PHIL KEEN DESIGNS
2012 NEW AMERICAN HOME
This year’s New American Home is a re-interpretation of the classic “white box” of the 60’s and 70’s and emphasizes leading-edge technology over sheer size. Walls of movable glass panels and motorized screens allow the interior spaces to flow into one another. On the second floor are two bedrooms, a master suite with a private workout studio, an outdoor yoga deck, a private sitting room and a spa-like master bath are accessible by public stairs or a private elevator. Additional public spaces include an art gallery, an artist studio, three second-floor decks and a lower level patio covered connecting to the pool and summer kitchen. 229 Alexander Place, Winter Park, 32790. May be seen by appointment; call (407) 599-3922.
GRAND AWARD: REMODEL SHOWCASE
PHIL KEEN DESIGNS
The owners of this 1940s lakefront home, located on Lake Sybelia in Maitland, wanted to change its architectural style from Spanish to Modern, open the living spaces, lighten the interiors and create spectacular lake views. Living areas were created by removing walls and eliminating wasted space, raising the ceiling and enlarging the family room, kitchen and master suite. White walls and charcoal maple flooring create a sophisticated look throughout, while the kitchen design pairs ebony cabinets with cloud-white countertops. An unused, detached garage was transformed into a guest suite, while a lanai with motorized, retractable screens was built to connect the suite to the main house. The home is occupied and not available for public viewing.
