THEY DONE THEIR BIT. NOW ITS TIME FOR US TO STEP UP.

Next time you make a purchase make an effort to buy American.

As a little girl, I remember my British grandfather talking about his father, who had served valiantly in World War l. When my great-grandfather and his troops came back to London they started a social club of sorts and called it the “Done Our Bit” club.

When we visited Granddad, he would take us to see the old soldiers and they would retell the same stories they’d told year after year. But not wanting to disappoint them, we listened attentively.

As America is climbing out of the worst economy our generation has known, it’s interesting to see that sense of camaraderie emerging once again. The rallying cry this time: “Buy American.”

ABCs World News with Diane Sawyer has been creating quite a buzz with its “Made in America” segments — from 10-year-old Jesse Clements of Asheville, N.C., who asked Santa to bring him made-in-America Christmas presents to Montana’s economist-turned-homebuilder Anders Lewendal, who’s constructing a home made using only American made products.

As a group, the building industry is as patriotic as they come. Their very profession — making the American Dream come true for families — is red and white and blue all over.

So Lewendal’s endeavor, and his estimate that increasing the domestic content of new homes by just 5 percent would create 220,000 American manufacturing jobs, has caught the eye of homebuilders across the nation, including some right here in Central Florida.

So, next time you make a purchase make an effort to buy American — that way we can all be proud to say we have “Done Our Bit” as well.
