Light fixtures are an important design element in any room. Not only do they provide illumination, but they also contribute to the overall look and feel of the space and help to set the mood. The right lighting, in fact, is crucial whether you’re cooking, working or relaxing.

Here are some different types of light fixtures and the ways in which they’re used:

• Chandeliers are great for general lighting; they can steal the show or provide the elegant finishing touch to any room. A mini-chandelier can add whimsy to a child’s bedroom or romance to a dressing room, while a mid-sized or large chandelier can create a commanding and elegant feeling in a master bedroom or formal living room

• Pendant lights are versatile fixtures ideal for general, task, mood and decorative lighting. Multi-pendant lights can be used over kitchen islands, billiard tables and dining room tables. Mini-pendants are most often used in hallways, offices or in kitchens over task-oriented areas such as sinks. Foyer pendants can make a foyer area warm and inviting and leave a lasting impression on guests.

• Flush-mount fixtures are directly attached to the ceiling without a chain or stem and are often designed not to be noticed. Semi-flush fixtures hang down slightly from the ceiling. Flush-mount fixtures are typically used in smaller areas with low ceilings, such as hallways, closets, laundry rooms or bathrooms. Semi-flush fixtures are ideal for kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms and foyers, and help give the illusion of a higher ceiling.
