ASID MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY AND BUYERS GUIDE
Expertise and Integrity Place ASID Members Above the Rest
Here’s your guide to finding a pro who’s perfect for your next project.
ASID Florida North Chapter is pleased, once again, to partner with Florida Homebuyer Jacksonville to bring you the annual ASID Membership Directory &
Buyers Guide for the North Florida area.
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest and largest professional organization representing professional interior designers, allied interior designers, students and industry partners.
This year, ASID is pleased to invite a larger group of design professionals to join our ongoing conversation about design: the art form, the science and the business. Our membership now includes experts in such sub-specialties as industrial design, organizational behavior, art history, graphic design, project management and furniture and textile design.
We believe that embracing and understanding all these areas of expertise is what makes ASID the leader in our industry. Indeed, we enjoy a long and rich history of architectural- and technology-based research.
ASID designers who specialize in residential projects are educated in the latest products, techniques, styles and trends – and are trained to assist you in planning and implementing them in your home in unique and beautiful ways.
Commercially, ASID designers are also trained in a myriad of disciplines, such as healthcare facilities and practices, aging in place issues, work environments, employee productivity, lighting specialties and finish specification.
We invite you to explore everything that ASID can do for you, whether you’re working on your home or office or are just interested in interior design as a whole. This directory will outline each of our membership designations so that you can make an informed decision when hiring an ASID professional.
We also invite you to visit our national website at asid.org and our local website at asidfloridanorth.com and see for yourself all of the exciting things going on in the interior design field today.
For the most forward thinking, unique and well-planned spaces, consider working with an ASID designer. You’ll be glad you did.
Sincerely,
Marsha L. Faulkner, ASID, LEED AP
President, ASID Florida North Chapter
ASID Members Specialize in Beauty, Comfort, Safety
Interior designers are on the leading edge of trends and technologies.
Interior design is one of those professions that requires a high level of intensive training as well as an aesthetic sense that is basically inherent. Yet, many people don’t realize how many skills interior designers must master.
Everyone, of course, has a basic idea of what they like and don’t like in terms of furnishings, colors and accessories. But what everyone doesn’t have is the mathematical skills required for proper space planning, the technical grounding required to understand textiles and finishes and the industry contacts required to access state-of-the-art products.
The list goes on. Clearly, the ability to appreciate a nice-looking home doesn’t qualify one to be a builder. Likewise, the ability to choose pleasing rugs, carpets and throw pillows doesn’t qualify one to be an interior designer.
In particular, ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) members have years of training and an array of certifications enabling them to deal with issues most of us wouldn’t even think of — from mitigating environmental hazards to designing for different age groups to evaluating safety concerns in the home or workplace.
These, in particular, are areas are where ASID really shines. That’s why the organization is a priceless resource for finding an educated and experienced designer who can handle any contingency.
“We offer the largest professional network in the world, which puts our members in contact with other designers all over the globe,” says Marsha Faulkner, ASID, LEED AP, owner of Studio M Interior Design in Jacksonville and president of the ASID Florida North Chapter. “Now, that’s a large network.”
Small wonder, then, that in a recent survey, nine out of 10 homeowners who hired an ASID member to facilitate a design project reported a “highly satisfactory” experience. And more importantly, they felt that using a professional was money well spent.
In addition to professional training, ASID members have extremely high standards of professional accountability. They’re held to a rigorous code of ethics that includes complete financial transparency.
“I’ve found that it’s as much about honesty and integrity as anything else,” says Amanda Webster, ASID, owner of Amanda Webster Design in Jacksonville Beach. “There are unlicensed decorators out there really taking advantage of consumers.”
Among other things, the code of ethics requires complete transparency in all financial matters. In addition, ASID provides its members access to easy-to-understand, consumer-friendly templates for contracts and agreements.
With about 650 members, the ASID Florida North Chapter encompasses Design Communities in Tallahassee, Pensacola (which includes Panama City and Destin), Orlando and Vero Beach as well as Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Design Community boasts more than 135 members, including industry partners.
The training ASID members receive is far more complex and in-depth than most people realize, notes Lisa Gie-lincki, ASID, president of Lisa
Gelencki Interior Design in Jacksonville. “ASID members have so much additional education,” she says. “In the areas of safety and health, for example, there are a lot of things consumers simply aren’t aware of.”
Gielincki, who works on both residential and commercial projects, cites her expertise in designing medical offices as an example. In addition to making certain that the ambience is soothing and inviting, she must also choose hygienic materials and work closely with equipment suppliers.
For her residential projects, Gielincki says that she and other ASID members ask their clients “a huge number of questions” to determine not only their personal taste but also how they live their lives and how their spaces can be designed to accommodate individual preferences and needs.
Chapter Professional Development Director Robyn Denny, ASID, agrees. “When advising clients, we consider your home, your needs and your style preferences as well as adjoining spaces, proportion and appropriate use of materials. In other words, the big picture.”
Susan Doris, ASID, president of Susan Doris Design in Jacksonville, says that she and her colleagues are sometimes called in to undo damage after clients try to “do it themselves.” If they’d consulted ASID professionals first, Doris adds, those projects would have been done right the first time — for basically the same cost.
“I think the biggest mistake people make is proportion,” says Doris. “They see a couch that looks great in the furniture store, buy it and then find that it’s way out of scale. We’re trained to create comfortable, safe spaces and to avoid mistakes like that.”
So what goes into a good design? And how do you ensure that the person you hire is the right one for the job? The benefits of using professional designers range from their skill at working within a variety of budgets to their knowledge of where to find just the right products for each project.
And while some designers become known for a certain aesthetic, very few limit themselves to any specific genre.
“My style is basically the style my clients prefer,” Gielincki says. “Most designers are adaptable, and their projects show that. They don’t impose their own styles if that’s not the client’s preference. Plus, designers who are affiliated with ASID know how to stay within a budget and complete the work on time.”
ASID is at the forefront of industry research and is constantly updating its members on emerging trends, such as universal design and aging in place, both of which deal with issues of accessibility. In addition, members are required to take continuing education courses each year covering such topics as environmental quality, landscape design, office trends, custom product development and home safety.
But does this level of expertise cost a proverbial arm and a leg? That’s a common misconception, say industry experts. A good designer should be able to work within any budget.
And these days, old rules of thumb about what you should spend to outfit a specific room have been tossed out of the proverbial window. Everyone, including designers, has learned to be more creative and to stretch their dollars.
Naturally, the more prepared you are, the less money you’ll ultimately spend. Here’s a list of questions your designer will likely ask regarding your project:
• For whom is the space being designed?
• What activities will take place there?
• How long do you plan to occupy the
space?
• When do you want to start work?
• When does the job need to be completed?
• Is there a specific occasion you’re preparing for?
• What is your budget?
• Are you relocating or will you live in the house during the project?
• What image do you want the space to project? Consider colors, style and feelings that you prefer.
• Do you have furniture, artwork, collectibles, heirlooms or other objects that must be part of the design?
• Who does the cleaning and how?
So, how do you go about selecting an interior designer? One of the first steps is to ask friends or colleagues whom they recommend or check with your state licensing board or the ASID Florida North Chapter to get a list of professionals in your area.
Schedule a preliminary consultation to meet with the designer and ask to see samples of his or her work. Keep in mind, say experts, that a good designer should be able to work with any style and budget — so don’t assume designers are strictly limited by the projects that they show you.
Ask about a designer’s background, experience and affiliations. And most importantly, see if his or her personality is a good fit for you, your family and your project.
Once you’ve decided which designer to hire and have discussed budget and compensation, be sure to get a written contract. It’s important to make clear the scope of work, methods of communication, timelines and deadlines and when payments will be due.
“Chemistry is really important,” says Gielincki. “What we do is very personal. Make sure you select someone who has not only the right qualifications, but someone with whom you feel compatible, and someone who has strong communication skills.”
