Local Experts Reveal Today's Hot Remodeling Trends

What are today’s hot remodeling trends? As local experts reveal, energy effi-ciency is at or near the top of the list as well as multipurpose spaces, state-of-the-art appliances, open kitchens and upscale finishes. Here’s what area pros have to say.

“People are increasingly conscious of their energy usage and are compelled to explore ways in which they can make a difference and contribute to the green movement. The first place to start is in the home — where consumers use more energy than in any other aspect of their life. Energy-efficient products and systems are the most requested features in green remodeling. The tremendous increase in eco-friendly remodeling is further enhanced by tax and utility incentives coupled with rising energy costs and more informed consumers.”

“People are not buying or building as large of a home. They’re downsizing. They are spending as much money as they were but now it’s on finishes and energy-efficient things, nicer floors and appliance packages — not square footage. They want to use the space they have and if they have space they don’t use, they don’t want it. They’re looking at having multipurpose spaces instead of dedicated spaces. More his-and-her offices instead of his office and her office, and a great room that is the living room and the media room — it’s kind of the heart of the home. Kitchens open up to the great room and that allows them to entertain.”

“Remodeling trends are mostly kitchens and bathrooms right now. They’re modernizing existing homes as opposed to adding space. They’re doing new cabinets and countertops; they want to get the kitchen up to date, give it a facelift and make it more functional. They’re changing cabinets from light to dark. They’re embracing built-in refrigerators, newer microwaves and induction cooktops.

“We’re doing a more contemporary look and a lot of green products. I’m seeing sustainable design, stainless and concrete countertops. People are no longer seeing their home as a money-making investment. Now, they want to customize for their needs. They don’t want a formal dining room. They want a bigger kitchen. Things are becoming more practical and useful.

"
The only real trend is technology, which changes. Just about everything else is the same. Granite is still big for countertops. But we’re installing exotic wood floors as opposed to traditional wood floors, and we‘re using finer quality products."
