Remodel Spotlight

SPOTLIGHT KITCHEN
Fabulous Functionality

The owners of this circa-1920s home wanted more space for family time and entertaining. Sport Nobles Construction delivered with a gorgeous kitchen that combines aesthetics and practicality. The addition of 260 square feet to the existing room made it possible to incorporate a double pantry, a workspace island, an eat-in bar and a seating area ideal for family gatherings. And Old World features such as mud-set flagstone floors, an inlaid stone backsplash over the stove and a wrought-iron chandelier serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the contemporary brightness of the cabinets and walls. There’s also a large wet bar adjacent to the seating area, complete with twin wine storage racks, a wine chiller and a separate sink.

Favorite Features: Custom coffee-glazed cabinetry; butcher-block- topped island; Kohler pot filler; matching cabinet panels on new G.E. appliances; under-cabinet accent lights and recessed ceiling can lights; raised granite peninsula with bar, which creates a natural division between kitchen and eating area.

SPOTLIGHT BATHROOMS
Contemporary Elegance

The homeowners used to joke that stepping into their bathroom was like stepping into a dark cave because the castle-like door and window didn’t let in any light. In addition, the cramped room was outdated and uninteresting. So the team at Plantation Housing Corp. II undertook a full-scale remodeling project, opening up walls and windows to brighten and modernize the space. The addition of a frameless glass-walled shower eliminated the cave-like ambience while matching granite-topped his-and-hers sinks and vanities brought an elegant yet contemporary touch. Last but not least, a granite-topped whirlpool tub was installed to provide a relaxing retreat and a great view through shuttered windows.

Favorite Features: Custom granite shower seats for comfort and safety; multiple Kohler body sprays and dual shower heads; three-dimensional glass tile in shower; real shell hardware on cabinet doors; built-in flat screen TV over his vanity; sconce lamps paired with recessed lights for ultimate ambience.

SPOTLIGHT WHOLE HOUSE
Not Just Winging It

The “bones” of this traditional two-story were fairly good ones—but the owners had dreams of transforming the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. So the team at Tom Trout performed a complete renovation of the existing home while adding on a wing that nearly doubled its original 2,910 square feet. The three-car garage was bumped closer to the street to make way for a sports room while the kitchen was reconfigured to include a butler’s pantry, separate dining and sitting areas and a larger island. A series of outdoor venues—a summer kitchen, a screened lanai with a fireplace and a smaller patio—lead to the pool.

Favorite Features: Isokern pumice stone fireplaces in the family room and on the screened-in porch; James Hardie plank-and-shake siding; floor-to-ceiling bookcases in the study; second-floor balcony off master bedroom; Andersen doors and windows; travertine tile on kitchen and eating area floors; a medley of wood ceilings that add visual interest.

SPOTLIGHT WHOLE HOUSE
Southern Hospitality

The owners of this Ponte Vedra home had two goals. They wanted to add a pool to entertain their little ones and to provide a “home away from home” to accommodate frequent house guests. The Whitehurst Group was up to the challenge, adding guest facilities that mirror the architectural style of the existing home. The 770-square-foot structure encompasses a bedroom, a bathroom and a den. And the view of the new pool from the covered-porch fireplace sitting area is so relaxing that it’s unlikely guests will ever want to leave—especially once they discover the wet bar and entertainment center inside.

Favorite Features: Belmarmi marble tile on pool deck; ProSource engineered wood floors in guest house; asymmetrical bar backsplash composed of Belmarmi Calcutta Gold marble mixed with Master Tile mosaics; tongue-in-groove white painted pine ceilings; Visual Comfort sconce-style bathroom lights.

SPOTLIGHT OUTDOOR SPACES
Like Going on Vacation

Because the owners travel extensively for business, the goal of this renovation was to make coming home feel like going on vacation. So Horn Builders and Kristi Wyndham Designs created a 2,000-square-foot, two-story addition, which allowed for a kitchen expansion and added an upstairs bonus room. The existing master suite was enlarged enough to accommodate an exercise room and his-and-hers closets. The resort-style atmosphere was accomplished through a series of whimsical separate rooms for poker, billiards, wine tasting and arts and crafts. A coffee station and wine grotto keep beverages at their perfect temperatures while a rooftop observation deck provides views of the pool, fish pond and three-hole golf course.?

Favorite Features: Custom wrought-iron gates and a barrel-vaulted alcove ceiling in the wine-tasting room; special chute in the poker room for cigar disposal; Z-Wave electronics switching system allows remote wireless control of lighting, temperature and security via laptop from anywhere in the world; custom Grabill cabinetry throughout; climbing wall in the exercise room.
